    • When Your Cough Just Won't Go Away

An irritating cough can wear you down.

It keeps you awake at night. It interrupts conversations. You apologise mid-conversation because you can't stop coughing. Your throat becomes sore from coughing so much, your chest feels heavy, and no matter how much you cough, you just can't seem to clear the mucus.

For many people it begins with a cold or the flu. The infection disappears, but the cough stays behind. Others have been clearing their throat or coughing for months or even years. Some notice it every winter, while others find smoke, dust or cold air quickly sets them off.

Whatever the cause, after a while it becomes exhausting. You're sick of coughing. You're sick of clearing your throat. You're sick of feeling like every conversation, every laugh or every deep breath might set it off again. More than anything, you just want it to go away so you can feel normal again.

      Why You're Still Coughing

Most people think the cough is the problem. But in many cases, it isn't.

A cough is one of the body's natural ways of protecting the lungs. It helps clear mucus, dust, smoke and other irritants from the airways before they travel deeper into the respiratory system.

But a cough can only do its job if it's able to remove whatever is irritating the airways. If it can't, the cough often continues.

If the mucus is thick and difficult to clear, you may keep coughing without bringing much up. If the throat or airways remain irritated, even talking, laughing or taking a deep breath can trigger another coughing fit. And if the lungs are still sensitive after a cold or the flu, the cough may linger long after the infection has disappeared.

That's why Breathe Easy doesn't rely on just one respiratory herb. It combines herbs that have traditionally been used to soothe irritated airways, help loosen stubborn mucus and support the lungs during recovery. Together, they provide a more complete traditional approach to respiratory support than any one herb could provide on its own.

Why Mucus Is Not Always a Bad Thing

Most people think mucus is something the body should get rid of. In reality, healthy mucus is one of your lungs' natural defence systems.

It forms a protective layer over the tissues lining the nose, throat and airways. It helps trap dust, allergens, smoke, microbes and other airborne particles so they can be removed before reaching deeper into the lungs.

The problems usually begin when there's too much mucus, it becomes thick and sticky, or it's difficult to clear.

Instead of clearing easily, it can leave you constantly clearing your throat, repeatedly coughing without bringing much up, or feeling like there's always something sitting on your chest that just won't come loose. On the other hand, if the airways become too dry or irritated, the throat can feel raw and even a deep breath may trigger another coughing fit.

The goal isn't to have no mucus at all. Healthy lungs are meant to produce mucus. The goal is having enough to protect the airways without it becoming so thick or sticky that it keeps triggering coughing or throat clearing.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

You don't need to experience every one of these. But if several sound familiar, there's a good chance you've found the reason you're here.

      • My cough just doesn't seem to go away.
      • I keep clearing my throat throughout the day.
      • My chest always feels as though there's mucus sitting on it.
      • I cough more when I talk, laugh or take a deep breath.
      • Every cold seems to settle on my chest.
      • I find it difficult to clear thick or stubborn mucus.
      • Cold air, smoke or dust quickly sets my cough off.
      • My throat often feels dry, scratchy or irritated.
      • I wake up coughing or needing to clear my throat.
      • I get out of breath more easily than I used to.

    • Why These Herbs Were Chosen

Traditional herbal practitioners rarely relied on a single respiratory herb. They recognised that herbs often had different traditional strengths, so they combined them to create broader formulas than any one herb could provide alone.

Some herbs were traditionally valued for soothing irritated throat and airway tissues. Others were chosen to help loosen stubborn mucus, support comfortable breathing or assist the lungs during recovery following coughs and respiratory illness.

Herbs Traditionally Used to Calm Irritating Coughs

      • Organic Liquorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
      • Organic Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)
      • Organic Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
      • Organic Ribwort (Plantago lanceolata)
      • Organic Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

An ongoing cough can become exhausting. It interrupts conversations, disturbs sleep and can leave the throat increasingly irritated. These herbs have traditionally been used to help calm persistent, irritating coughs while also soothing the tissues of the throat and airways.

Herbs Traditionally Used to Soothe Irritated Respiratory Tissues

      • Organic Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
      • Organic Liquorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
      • Organic Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis)
      • Organic Ribwort (Plantago lanceolata)

Persistent coughing can leave the throat and airways feeling dry, sore and irritated. These herbs have traditionally been used to soothe the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, helping calm tissues that have become increasingly sensitive through repeated coughing.

Herbs Traditionally Used to Help Loosen and Clear Stubborn Mucus

      • Elecampane (Inula helenium)
      • Organic Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
      • Organic Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
      • Organic Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Healthy mucus plays an important role in protecting the lungs, but when it becomes thick or difficult to clear it can leave the chest feeling heavy and congested. These herbs have traditionally been used to help loosen stubborn mucus and support its natural clearance from the respiratory tract.

Herbs Traditionally Used to Support Healthy Respiratory Function

      • Elecampane (Inula helenium)
      • Organic Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
      • Organic Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
      • Organic Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Traditional herbal practitioners have long valued these herbs for supporting healthy respiratory function. Together they have traditionally been used to promote comfortable breathing, support healthy lung tissues and assist the body's natural respiratory defences during times of seasonal respiratory irritation.

Herbs Traditionally Used During Recovery Following Coughs and Respiratory Illness

      • Elecampane (Inula helenium)
      • Organic Liquorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
      • Organic Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)
      • Organic Ribwort (Plantago lanceolata)
      • Organic Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Even after a cold or respiratory illness has settled, the lungs and airways can take time to recover. These herbs have traditionally been used to continue supporting the respiratory system during this recovery period, helping soothe lingering irritation while the lungs gradually return to normal.

Why We Use Liquid Herbal Extracts

      • Only the concentrated herbal compounds are extracted—not the bulk plant fibre found in powders, tablets and capsules
      • Rapid absorption through the tissues of the mouth and digestive tract
      • Does not rely solely on digestion to begin delivering herbal compounds
      • No synthetic fillers or binders
      • No bulking agents
      • No artificial flavours or sweeteners
      • No unnecessary additives
      • 100% alcohol-free formula

Unlike powders, capsules and tablets that contain the entire dried herb, our liquid extracts contain only the concentrated plant compounds drawn out during extraction. This allows the herbal constituents to begin interacting with the body without first requiring tablets, capsules or plant fibre to be broken down.

      Our Commitment to Purity

      • Vegetable Glycerine: Used as a natural preservative and sweetener without the need for artificial additives.
      • Purified Grander Water: Free from chlorine and fluoride, providing a clean base for our herbal extracts.
      • 100% Alcohol-Free: The alcohol used during extraction is removed under vacuum at low temperatures before the concentrate is blended with vegetable glycerine and purified water.
      • Vegan & Allergen-Free: Free from gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, nuts, corn, yeast, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

How NatroVital Breathe Easy Is Made

We begin with a pharmaceutical-grade alcohol extraction to draw out the broad spectrum of plant compounds from the raw herbs. Once extraction is complete, the alcohol is gently removed under vacuum at low temperatures to help preserve the integrity of the herbal constituents.

The concentrated extract is then blended with vegetable glycerine and purified Grander water to create a clean, stable and completely alcohol-free herbal tonic.

Every bottle is formulated and produced by us in Australia using small-batch manufacturing methods that prioritise purity, quality and attention to detail.

      Active Herbal Ingredients Per Serve

Each 1mL of NatroVital Breathe Easy contains the equivalent of 500mg of dried herbal material, providing a consistent concentration of herbs traditionally used to soothe irritated respiratory tissues, loosen stubborn mucus and support comfortable breathing and lung function.

Why can a cough last for weeks after a cold or the flu has gone?

The infection may have settled, but that does not always mean the respiratory tissues have fully recovered. The throat and airways can remain irritated and unusually sensitive for some time afterwards.

When this happens, ordinary things such as talking, laughing, cold air or taking a deep breath may continue triggering the cough reflex. The cough is no longer necessarily being driven by the original infection. It may be continuing because the tissues lining the airways are still recovering.

This is one reason traditional respiratory formulas often contain herbs used not only for mucus clearance, but also to soothe irritated throat and airway tissues during recovery.

Why do I keep coughing even though I am not bringing anything up?

Not every cough is caused by loose mucus that is ready to come up. Sometimes the airways are dry, irritated or overly sensitive, so the cough continues even though there is very little to clear.

In other cases, mucus may be present but too thick or sticky to move easily. You may cough repeatedly, feel something sitting in the chest or throat, yet bring up very little.

This can create a frustrating cycle: the irritation triggers coughing, repeated coughing irritates the tissues further, and the increasingly sensitive tissues trigger even more coughing.

Why do talking, laughing or taking a deep breath trigger another coughing fit?

Talking, laughing and deep breathing all move larger amounts of air across the tissues lining the throat and airways. When those tissues are calm, this usually causes no problem. When they are irritated or sensitive, the movement of air itself can be enough to trigger the cough reflex.

That is why you may feel reasonably comfortable while sitting quietly, only to start coughing as soon as you speak, laugh, walk outside into cold air or try to take a deeper breath.

The problem is not always that something new has entered the lungs. Sometimes the respiratory tissues have simply become so sensitive that normal airflow is being interpreted as an irritation.

Why does my chest feel as though there is mucus stuck in it that will not come up?

Mucus is easiest to clear when it is thin enough to move through the airways. When it becomes thick, sticky or dehydrated, it can cling to the respiratory tissues instead of moving upwards easily.

This can leave the chest feeling heavy or congested, as though there is mucus sitting there that just won't come up. You may cough over and over, feeling as though you're almost about to clear it, only to end up bringing up little or nothing at all.

The answer is not always to suppress the cough. In this situation, supporting the natural loosening and movement of stubborn mucus may be more useful than simply trying to stop the body from coughing.

Why am I constantly clearing my throat?

Many people say it feels as though there's always something they need to clear from the back of their throat. They clear it, feel better briefly, then the sensation quickly returns.

Ironically, constantly clearing your throat may keep the problem going. Every time you clear it, the delicate tissues can become a little more irritated. As that irritation builds, the urge to clear your throat can become even stronger, creating a cycle that repeats throughout the day.

Many people don't think of throat clearing as coughing, but it's really a mild cough. If you're clearing your throat dozens of times a day, those repeated little bursts of irritation can stop the tissues from getting the chance to settle down properly

Why is my cough often worse at night?

Several things change when you lie down. Mucus may pool or move differently through the throat and airways, while drainage from the nose or sinuses may become more noticeable. The bedroom air may also be cooler or drier than the air you breathe during the day.

There are also fewer distractions at night. During the day you may barely notice the occasional throat tickle, but once the room is quiet and you are trying to sleep, every urge to cough becomes much harder to ignore.

Repeated night-time coughing can then leave the throat more irritated, disrupt sleep and make both the cough and fatigue feel worse the following day.

Why do smoke, dust, fragrances or cold air set my cough off so quickly?

The respiratory tract is designed to notice substances that may irritate or threaten the lungs. Smoke, dust, strong fragrances and sudden cold air can all activate this protective response.

When the airways are already irritated, the threshold for triggering a cough can become much lower. Something that would normally cause little reaction may suddenly lead to throat tickling, chest tightness or a prolonged coughing fit.

This helps explain why the same environment may not have bothered you before your illness, yet now seems to set the cough off almost immediately.

Why does every cold seem to settle on my chest?

Two people can catch exactly the same cold virus yet have completely different experiences. One has a blocked nose for three days. The other spends weeks coughing with chest congestion. The virus is only part of the story. How your lungs respond also depends on factors such as your immune defences, overall respiratory health, nutrition, stress levels, sleep quality, smoking, alcohol intake, underlying lung conditions and how effectively mucus is cleared from the airways.

When these factors are less than ideal, the infection and resulting inflammation may extend further into the lower airways instead of remaining mainly in the nose and throat. This can lead to increased mucus production, chest congestion and a cough that lingers long after the original infection has gone.

If every cold seems to "go to your chest", it may be worth looking beyond the infection itself. Supporting your immune system, maintaining good nutrition, avoiding smoking, limiting excessive alcohol, getting adequate sleep and looking after your respiratory health may all help reduce the likelihood of it happening again.

Is coughing always a bad thing?

No. Coughing is one of the body's natural protective reflexes. It helps prevent mucus, dust, smoke and other irritants from travelling deeper into the lungs.

The cough becomes a problem when it is no longer clearing anything effectively, continues long after the original irritation has passed, disrupts sleep or leaves the throat and chest increasingly sore.

The goal is not always to silence every cough. It is to understand why the cough is happening and support the respiratory system so the cough no longer needs to work so hard.

Are there other supplements that work well with Breathe Easy?

Yes. Breathe Easy is often combined with other supplements depending on why you're experiencing an ongoing cough or respiratory symptoms.

NatroVital Fighter is commonly used during the early stages of a cold or respiratory infection. While Breathe Easy focuses on soothing irritated airways and supporting healthy mucus clearance, Fighter is designed to provide broader herbal support during the illness itself.

NatroVital Liposomal C & D provides vitamins C and D, two nutrients that play important roles in normal immune system function. We commonly recommend it alongside Breathe Easy to provide nutritional support while the herbs focus on soothing irritated airways and supporting healthy mucus clearance.

If you seem to catch every cold that goes around or experience frequent respiratory infections, NatroVital Organic Mushroom 7 + Astragalus may also be worth considering. It combines seven medicinal mushrooms with Astragalus, herbs traditionally used to support healthy immune function.

What makes herbal tonics different from capsules, tablets, or powders?
NatroVital Breathe Easy is a liquid herbal tonic made without synthetic fillers, binders, bulking agents, preservatives, flavours, or sweeteners—ingredients commonly found in capsules, tablets, and powders. Because it’s alcohol-free and doesn’t require digestion, it delivers fast-absorbing, concentrated herbal extracts in their purest form. You get only what the body needs—nothing unnecessary or artificial.

Want to know more about what’s really in your supplements? Read our blog on excipients here.
Why choose NatroVital over other supplement brands?

NatroVital is a proudly Australian-owned and operated business, created by Greg Newson—a qualified naturopath, herbalist, and nutritionist with over 20 years of clinical experience. NatroVital was born out of frustration with the supplement industry. Too many products were loaded with synthetic fillers, binders, sweeteners, and unnecessary additives that offered little benefit—and often stood in the way of genuine healing.

At NatroVital, we believe that what’s left out of a supplement is just as important as what goes in. That’s why every one of our herbal tonics is made using only pure, concentrated herbal extracts—nothing more. All of our products, including Breathe Easy, are formulated and produced at our own facility here in Australia. We're a small, family-run business committed to clean, honest, and effective natural health solutions you can trust.

Is Breathe Easy suitable for vegans and vegetarians?
Yes. NatroVital Breathe Easy is 100% plant-based and does not contain any animal-derived ingredients.
Are there any precautions or interactions to be aware of?
While Breathe Easy is made using herbs with a long history of traditional use, please exercise caution in the following situations:
Anti-hypotensive medications: Liquorice may reduce the effectiveness of some blood pressure-lowering medications. Use with caution if you have high blood pressure, hypokalaemia, oedema, or congestive heart failure.
Medication absorption: It is recommended to take Breathe Easy away from prescription medications, as some ingredients may interfere with absorption.
Allergies: Avoid if you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients.

Always consult your practitioner if you’re on medication, have a health condition, or are unsure if this tonic is suitable for you.
Is NatroVital Breathe Easy a therapeutic medicine?
NatroVital Breathe Easy is made using traditional herbal knowledge and is professionally formulated by qualified health practitioners. It is not listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and does not claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.

This tonic is designed to support lung function, respiratory comfort, and mucus clearance through traditional herbal practice. Please consult your healthcare provider if you’re unsure whether this tonic is right for your needs.

In Australia, only products that are listed or registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) are permitted to make therapeutic claims. As NatroVital Breathe Easy is not TGA-listed, we are unable to state specific health outcomes—even when supported by traditional use or research. Instead, we explain how herbs have been traditionally used in herbal medicine so you can make informed decisions about your health.
Why isn’t NatroVital Breathe Easy listed with the TGA?
We’ve chosen not to list this product with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) so that we can continue to speak openly about the long-standing traditional uses of herbs. TGA listing brings strict language restrictions that often prevent us from sharing this knowledge clearly. It also requires manufacturing on a much larger scale through licensed facilities, along with substantial initial and ongoing registration costs. These factors significantly increase production expenses and limit flexibility. By creating small-batch formulas using clean, high-quality ingredients, we’re able to keep our tonics affordable and stay true to our herbal roots—without compromising quality or integrity.

Unlike large-scale TGA-licensed manufacturers, we create our tonics using a unique process that removes alcohol after extraction and replaces it with natural vegetable glycerin. This method preserves the herbal actives while creating a clean, alcohol-free final product. It’s a more labour-intensive process that isn’t offered by conventional manufacturers, but it allows us to stay true to our values of purity, quality, and making traditional herbal support affordable and available without compromise.

Each NatroVital tonic is created with a hands-on approach that respects the living nature of the herbs. We believe that passion, care, and healing intention are just as important as the ingredients themselves—qualities often lost in large-scale, industrial production. Our small-batch methods honour traditional herbal wisdom while delivering pure, effective tonics crafted with purpose.
